A Breakdown of Home Care Services
Veterans deserve our utmost love, support, and care. However, many find themselves isolated, struggling to cook, clean, and care for themselves daily. After their hard work and bravery for our country, they deserve a caregiver who can help with daily tasks.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers various home care services to support Veterans and their family members. These services are administered by trained in-home caregivers who arrive at their clients’ homes every day to provide non-medical support.
How Veterans Can Use Their Home Care Benefits
These aides can help Veterans with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and meal preparation, ensuring they can maintain their independence and dignity. Additionally, home care providers offer companionship to Veterans by engaging in meaningful interactions and fostering a sense of connection. They engage in conversations, share stories, and participate in activities that align with the Veteran’s interests and preferences, improving their mental health and emotional well-being.
Why Are Home Care Providers Important?
Home care providers are essential for many reasons. Veterans often confront unique challenges later in life, including physical and mental health issues stemming from their military service, difficulties transitioning to civilian careers and lifestyles, and navigating complex Veterans’ benefits systems.
Additionally, the emotional toll of combat experiences and the potential for social isolation can compound these challenges, requiring targeted support and resources to ensure their well-being. To help alleviate these issues, home care providers can provide services while being viewed as:
Trusted Friends
Dealing with in-home agencies that don’t cater to your needs is frustrating. But once you find the agency that listens to you and addresses your questions and concerns, they’ll pair you with a caregiver who can meet your needs. It’s comforting that the same person you’ve gotten to know will visit each day to talk to you during breakfast or lunch, watch TV with you as they fold your laundry, or play a game of cards while the dishwasher runs.
Dutiful Helpers
Your days of grocery shopping on your own and overexerting yourself with housework are over. That’s what your caregiver is there for. Their primary purpose is to make sure you’re happy and comfortable. Whether you need help with cooking or personal hygiene, your dedicated caregiver will gladly assist. Many Veterans have loved ones and friends who help them with these tasks whenever they have time, but you should have a caregiver there every day when needed.
Your health and well-being are essential. Call AVCC to lead you to the professionals you need.
How Aid and Attendance Benefits Work
The Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit is an enhanced Veterans Affairs (VA) pension provided to Veterans and surviving spouses who require assistance with activities of daily living. Designed to help cover long-term care costs, this benefit can be used to pay for in-home care services, assisted living, nursing homes, memory care, and adult day services. The benefits are also provided to Veterans staying with family caregivers.
Aid and Attendance Can Help Finance Your Home Care
If you’re wondering how much a caregiver costs, you may be happy to know that VA Aid and Attendance can help with the expenses tremendously. If you do not currently receive A&A benefits but you’re curious about your eligibility status, you must answer yes to at least one of the following statements to qualify:
- You need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing & dressing, personal hygiene, walking, and getting into/out of bed, to name a few.
- You spend all day in bed due to illness or immobility.
- You are a patient in a nursing home due to a medical disability.
- Your eyesight is limited; even with glasses or contact lenses, your vision is 5/200 in both eyes, or there is concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.
- You already have a VA Pension and are housebound due to a permanent disability.
Don’t Miss Out on the Care You Need
The cost of in-home care can be a financial burden for anyone. Things can be overwhelming if you’re on your own, looking for documentation, making calls, filing paperwork, etc. Many Veterans are unaware of the help available to them right at their fingertips. Don’t miss out on the benefits and financial assistance you’re owed because you’re frustrated with the VA. The level of care you need doesn’t have to cost you more than you can manage.
In some cases, benefits and government assistance can be combined to pay for care costs.
