What Is Home Care?

What is Home Care?

Even if you’ve heard the words “home care services” before, you may wonder what home care providers do. Let’s explore the different types of home care services and see how each kind meets Veterans’ home care needs.

Understanding the Different Types of Home Care Services and Workers

When you begin looking into home care services, you’ll find there are several different types of services and workers. These different types include:

  • Personal Care Aide Services: A personal care aide comes into your home to assist you with the activities of daily living (ADL). These activities include bathing, grooming and hygiene, dressing, eating, medication reminders, and light housekeeping. The home care providers we work with send personal care aides to Veterans’ homes to help them perform their ADLs. Professional assistance with ADLs allows Veterans to stay in their homes as long as possible.
  • Home Health Aides (HHAs): Home health aides visit Veterans at home to provide skilled nursing services or other medical care. These aides may be licensed practical nurses or speech, occupational, or physical therapists. HHAs often visit Veterans after they return home from a hospital stay. Private insurance and Medicare often cover home health aides’ services.
  • Registered Nurses (RNs): Registered nurses visit Veterans who need high-level nursing care to handle serious medical conditions. Medical care from RNs is often covered by long-term care insurance. Both RNs’ and HHAs’ services are considered home health care services, not home care services.

These types of care meet Veterans’ various daily needs. Once you understand what each type of care covers, you can compare them to your needs and select the right type for you.

Which Type of Care Does AVCC Help Veterans Access?

AVCC helps Veterans connect with home care agencies that assist them with the activities of daily living. We understand that you want to stay in your home, so we help you find a local home care provider who sends personal care aides to help through your day. We also help you access the funds you need to pay for home care services.

How Do You Pay for Home Care Services?

Most private insurance does not cover home care services. So how can you afford home care? If you receive a VA pension, you can apply for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. We screen you for your Aid and Attendance eligibility and help you navigate the application process. Once you begin receiving this benefit, we help you locate home care providers in your area and select the one that’s the right fit for your needs.

Why Take Advantage of Home Care Services?

When you decide to use a personal care aide, you make it easier to take care of yourself and stay in your home. You can stay in your home as long as you want, instead of moving to a retirement community or nursing home to receive daily assistance. Overall, these services help you maintain a good quality of life in your later years.

Why Work With AVCC?

AVCC balances two main tasks: helping Veterans and surviving spouses apply for Pension with Aid and Attendance and pairing them with local home care providers. We work with you through both of these processes so you can access these services and pay for them as easily as possible. We understand that you need some help to get through your days as you get older, and we want you to find that help and the funds to pay for it.

Begin Accessing Home Care With AVCC

If you’re ready to find a home care agency in your area that meets your daily needs, reach out to AVCC today. We help you find a provider that staffs personal care aides to work with you and access the funds you need to pay for their services. Let us help you through the Pension Aid and Attendance application process. After that, we’ll find the right local care provider to maintain your quality of life.
